Fred Appelbaum, M.D.

Dr. Fred Appelbaum is head of the Hutchinson Center's Clinical Research division. Behind him is a painting of Fred Hutchinson.

Dr. Fred Appelbaum is Director of the Clinical Research Division of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Head of the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Washington. He has also served as the Executive Director of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance since its formation in 1998. In these roles, Dr. Appelbaum has responsibility for clinical sciences activities at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and University of Washington in general, and serves as an advisor for the clinical sciences components of this interdisciplinary research program.

Dr. Appelbaum received his MD degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1972. He joined Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington in 1978 after spending four years at the National Cancer Institute. His own work centers on the biology and treatment of acute myeloid leukemia. He is the principal investigator of grant NCI PO1 CA 18029 ("Adult Leukemia Research Center") and chairs the Southwest Oncology Leukemia Committee. He is the author of over 750 publications dealing mostly with hematological malignancies.

Dr. Appelbaum is the principal investigator on the Fred Hutchinson/University of Washington oncology training grant. He also has had a role in many of the national hematology/oncology organizations and recently served as the Chair of the Board of Scientific Advisors for the National Cancer Institute.
