A declaration of independence from colon cancer

We hold these truths to be self evident:

• That 3,000 Washington men and women are diagnosed with colon cancer every year.
• That nearly 1,000 will die annually.
• That nine of 10 diagnoses are in people over age 50.
• That colon cancer is one of the most easily detected cancers.
• That we the people can eliminate deaths from colon cancer by screening.

Therefore I declare and pledge:

• To join the campaign to end colon cancer deaths in Washington.
• To get myself screened if I am over age 50 or if I carry higher than normal risk for the disease.
• To ask my friends and family to follow my example, join the campaign, be screened and help educate all Washingtonians about our cause.
