Help & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. I'm already required to take ethics training for another program. Does that count?

Many postdoctoral researchers, clinical fellows, and graduate students are already required by the federal government to complete Human Subjects Training and/or training in the use of animals for research, or to complete ethics training for NIH training grants. Some programs, like the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program also have a research ethics training requirement. Any of the trainings taken for these programs can be applied on a one-for-one basis towards fulfillment of the general research ethics education requirement.

Q. What about training I did before I got to the Center?

Ethics education received prior to being at the Center may be considered as a substitute for part of the Center's training requirement. However, at least two events out of the required six must take place while participants are at the Center. Training prior to being at the Center should be recent, at the graduate level or above, and relate directly to research ethics. For acceptance of prior events, submit an Ethics Event Form or contact Lee Strucker, (206) 667-1247, lstrucker@fhcrc.org.

Q. When do I have to complete the requirement?

Participants are expected to complete at least two events per year in order to fulfill the requirement during their tenure at the Center. Those who spend or will spend less than a year at the Center are encouraged to attend at least one event.
