An M.D. who is interested in becoming a visiting investigator should read the Visiting Physician Program informational statement. Please contact June Nishimura at jnishimu@seattlecca.org for further information.
A Ph.D.or MD. who is interested in doing laboratory research in the Clinical Research Division should see the Clinical Research Division faculty page http://www.fhcrc.org/science/clinical/clinical_faculty.html to identify a member with whom you would like to work. Please contact the faculty coordinator.
The Hutchinson Center has established a summer visiting scientist program, funded through the NCI CURE program (Continuing Umbrella of Research Education). This program allows a faculty member at an undergraduate institution within the US to work in a laboratory at the Hutchinson Center for up to 12 weeks during the summer quarter in Seattle. We invite letters of interest from any faculty who would like to take advantage of this opportunity, via e-mail, to Dr. Barry Stoddard.
The program pays all travel costs (up to the equivalent of round trip airfare and a 10-week local auto rental), complete lodging costs in Seattle in a convenient furnished apartment, and a $500.00 per week living cost allowance. Lodging generally consists of a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment near the research center in downtown Seattle, comfortable for a family with one or two children. We also provide funds for the purchase of up to $2000.00 in supplies to support the work in the host lab; some or all of these funds may be used to purchase supplies and kits to take back at the end of the summer for research and/or educational use. The rationale for this program is that mentors and teachers at undergraduate institutions have a wide and long-lasting impact on a large number of students. By exposing faculty members of remote to the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, we hope that entire classes of students may become familiar with training opportunities at this and other Cancer Centers, and in regions of the US remote from their home institutions.
Applications, in the form of a letter to the individual noted above, should be accompanied by a CV and a letter of support from an appropriate departmental chair and/or academic dean indicating that the faculty member is eligible for and allowed to spend a summer away from their institution for the purpose of a visiting scientist intern program. Faculty at all academic levels are eligible.
Criterion for participation include the following, and should be addressed in the application letter:
The funded visiting scientist position is intended to allow the home institution to release the successful nominee from academic obligations through the summer academic term, in order to pursue full time research in Seattle. The successful nominee will be provided with a list of faculty at FHCRC, and their research programs, which have agreed to host such an individual if chosen and to provide an exceptional research experience. It is anticipated that the host P.I. will provide a significant amount of time for discussion with the sabbatical guest regarding research activities and direction.
As stated above, it is our hope that this program will not only be beneficial to teaching faculty around the country, but also to their students and to this and other cancer centers by increasing awareness of our training programs and research.
